The failure Disease

Excusitis: The Failure Disease

"I can't do this; I think I'm sick."

"That guy is so intelligent; no one except him can pass the course."

"He's too young; he can't be in the university."

"She's so lucky. Many people came before her and couldn't finalize a contract."

These are statements we often use or hear. But have we ever stopped to think about what they really imply?

While exploring the world of books, I came across The Magic of Thinking Big by David J. Schwartz. In Chapter 2, the author introduces a word I had never heard before: Excusitis. He describes it as the failure disease and illustrates it through various examples and real-life experiences.

So, what is Excusitis?

Excusitis is a psychological term used to describe the habit of constantly making excuses. Every time we complain that we cannot perform because of our health, blame our failures on bad luck, convince ourselves that we are not intelligent enough, or believe that we are either too young or too old to achieve something, we are feeding this disease.

According to Schwartz, Excusitis commonly appears in four forms:

  • Health Excusitis
  • Luck Excusitis
  • Intelligence Excusitis
  • Age Excusitis

The danger of Excusitis is that it gradually limits our potential. The more excuses we make, the more we convince ourselves that success is beyond our reach.

Fortunately, every problem has a solution. So how do we cure ourselves of this failure disease?

  1. Take responsibility for your actions and outcomes.
  2. Stop making excuses and start looking for solutions.
  3. Focus on what you can do rather than what you cannot.
  4. Act on your plans instead of postponing them.
  5. Develop a growth mindset and believe that improvement is possible.

Reading this chapter helped me realize that books offer much more than information.

If there is one lesson I took away from this reading, it is this: success begins when excuses end.
